Vox Themes: Piximix Interview
We recently unveiled a new set of themes by the amazing Piximix, and they were kind enough to chat about their work and what they're up to these days.
1. Tell us a little bit about Piximix, and how you got started.
Piximix is Kyle Hoyt, Rhandee Leaño, Garth Webb (who works at Six Apart), and Catherine Maske -- we all worked together in San Francisco at one point or another doing web stuff (like everyone else in San Francisco). One day, we decided the web was not enough and designed and produced our own t-shirts with strange little characters on them. Those sold well enough that we were able to make more t-shirts, accessories, and whatever else we could think of that could really use some strange little characters on them. As long as people need stuff with strange little characters, we'll be here.
2. What’s the stories behind the Appley Rotten and Pixipets series?
Appley Rotten is the little zombie fruit girl. She used to be a perfectly well-adjusted little fruit girl until someone took a bite out of her and left her for dead. Her friends are Orange and Lime are little fruit girls who've been similarly mistreated by hungry people. They're all small, cute and colorful with a chip on their shoulders you wouldn't believe (and who can blame them?). You can find out more about them by visiting their website at appleyrotten.com, chock full of art, animation, and more.
The Pixipets are a group of adorable little creatures who say the #$@% things. Their ongoing comic series at pixipets.com is strangely habit forming. Don't say we didn't warn you...
3. What is Piximix up to these days? Can you describe some of your current projects?
We're always working on cool new products. Our fall line of clothing is right around the corner, which includes some great new Appley t-shirts and bags. We're also planning to bring together our webcomics into some really nice printed collections for next year and are currently working with an awesome local sculptor to start the long process of realizing our characters in toy form (We just want them for ourselves, but we'll be willing to share when they're all done. Maybe.). And this last one is extremely hush-hush, but we've got some new characters in the works, too...
Of course, we'll have all of the latest news on our site at piximix.com as it happens.
4. What are your favorite Vox features?
Vox itself is incredibly easy to use, and you can have a slick looking blog up and going within minutes. We also like the integration of all of the media in Vox - like being able to link to our YouTube videos and Flickr stuff without leaving our account. Oh, and the fact that it has Piximix themes is pretty cool, too. ; )
