Woo hoo! I just got home and what a nice surprise! I'm still trying to look at all of the themes, but I'm happy that the banners I've vouched for have made the cut! :-D
Yay! 'scribe' and 'cartographer' made it! :)
Wow, thank you so much. I can't believe my entries made it into the top 50. You really made my day, Vox. <3 Congrats to everyone who made it, too! I viewed a lot of entries and so many of them were wonderful-- yay Vox. ^^

I saw so many of my favorites in here that I literally got a little teary eyed. I didn't realize how involved in this contest I was even though I wasn't entered. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone that participated. It was really exciting.
I don't think the same person should be allowed to win multiple times. It takes up spots where others could have won. i see some people with 2 of their entries up there. i think winning with one banner should be the limit. like color variations... that shouldn't be concidered a winner if it's just other colors. i'm not trying to attack them, it's just like color variations is still the same design, just different colors to fit more tastes. and the tiki1 and tiki2. nothing against them. they are very good, but i think jared should only have one winner's slot. sorry if i offended anyone, i just think it's not fair for someone to win in the same contest multiple times...
not to make that sound mean, but i think those additional winning entries from the same person shouldn't take a slot, but still be put into banners. it's just i think 50 individuals should win instead of just 50 designs :/
Oops! File size! I didn't stop to think that would be an issue, but it makes sense. Still, it's good to see so many represented here that I felt fit very well into the existing Vox theme set. Great contest! Thanks for the fun!
Unicorn - I see your point, but the original tally was meant to be 5. I think they upped it to 50 templates, not necessarily 50 winners. ...but who am I to put words in their collective mouth?

Anyway, w00t! Congrats to the other winners!

Ooh, I've picked mine already. Good job guys!

I agree. I was under the impression that 50 USERS were going to have thier banners selected.

I love the banners that were selected tho. Congrats!

YAY :)

Great picks, although I can't believe you didn't choose this http://lala.vox.com/library/photo/6a00c2251dd48c8fdb00c2252408168fdb.html and this http://rae-eats.vox.com/library/photo/6a00c225227c89604a00c22523506c8fdb.html. Those are so cute and well done!
I cant wait to use them! Theyre awesome! When can we expect them?
Very nice!
I'm not afraid to be mean.

Some of these are very unimpressive compared to the entirety of the bannars submitted. And none of them really WOW'd me at all.

And I agree that it isn't fair that more than one (and in some cases more than 2) were chosen from the same people.
Unicorn,

I can understand what you're trying to say, but I'm not comfortable with you naming me specifically as an example of what upsets you about this contest. I feel like it WAS sorta a personal attack on my work and I don't think that's fair as it wasn't up to me what got chosen. I would have been just as content if only one of my entries was chosen. As it stands, I assumed that the two tiki versions would be variations of the same theme which is typical of VOX already - same theme, different colours.

And, to agree with someone else, I think that VOX did what they set out to do, which is select five winning themes from five different users. After their initial selection, additional themes met the criteria they were looking for and they chose to use those as well. If those themes happened to be by the same user, or by fifty different ones, I don't think it should matter much as they were EXTRAS which they were offereing to the VOX community as an effort to give us more variety in our blog looks.

I just don't want this to turn into a petty thing. I think that there is a large array of excellent work chosen and I don't think any one person was favored against anyone else. It's really about who was able to create somethign which met the criteria of the contest best.

Cheers

J
I can't wait!

I think that obviously not everyone will like every banner.. some here I'm not that fond of and others I really liked haven't been picked (hmpf).

I think it would be unfair if out of 5 winners, more than one banner was made by the same person. But these are FIFTY which is a whole bunch. I can see the point that 2 banners that are absolutely identical except for the color should not be picked twice, but some people put a lot of effort into 2 or more banners (I know I did), so I think it's perfectly fair that more than 1 can get picked.
When people who submitted a lot of good banners can only get picked once, you'd 'have' to pick more banners that might not be as good as the others, you know?

Would you mind giving some examples of banner you liked? I'm just curious :)

I mean, they picked a Koala, a Toucan, an owl etc etc so why not a Panda?

I did find the bottom 5 winners pleasing. Especially the pen and ink one because it is a blog, witty and interesting.
Lynn
^^ I like the panda banner, I hadn't even seen it before.

And I guess we all have different tastes.. I personally like the drawings/illustrations better than the photo banners, I find it takes more effort to make them and it's also the 'Vox style' (but I know many people would like to see more photo & realistic banners).

But maybe I'm just biased because I put so much work in my koala and the other two banners.
The tempers here seem to head in the attitude of bad sportsmanship and that is unnecessary. It was a fun contest and not something that needs to go in that direction. If it goes there, I see no reason why Vox will continue to do this like this as I know that if it were my site and people started calling each other out for stuff like this, I'd be the first to yank the cord.

It was a contest that was to have 5 winners. The 5 were chosen. The rest are bonuses to all of us. They could have ignored the plea from the majority of us begging for more winners and saved themselves a bunch of work, but they didn't. There is nothing to say that these banners won't eventually be chosen for something, but they weren't chosen today. It's nothing personal. It's their site and they are going to take it where they want to go. If you don't want the fear of failure, then you don't enter the contest.

Every single person that entered put time and effort into the entries. I know that I looked into all of the entries that were visible and searchable and I didn't find a single one that I thought "Oh gosh no I wouldn't pick that one." There were some that weren't my style or that I didn't think would mesh with what I thought the Vox atmosphere was, but the idea that we need to have drama over it is silly. We can either be gracious and be happy and have more fun little contests like this or we can be crabby and unsportsmanlike and make this site an unhappy place to be where the people that run it hate the users and don't want to do anything for us like some other unnamed sites...

I love it here. Quit harshing the mellow and get on board. You are all way more talented than me so suck it up and bask in the "I'm better than Jill" and be happy.
I would much rather exclude myself from the disagreement following the results, but I do have a bit of confusion regarding the contest. When creating these entries I was unaware of file-size constraints for each entry, and I feel that some entries with high file-size could be compromised by a requirement that many did not know about. I do however understand the reasoning behind this, with performance of the site itself and manageability in mind, practical.

There was a variety of in this contest, and I am so glad to see so many users come together to showcase their creative sides. We should enjoy even having opportunities such as these, rather than criticize them after the fact.

Wow, so many amazing entries to this contest! I wish I had submitted one now.. but I was so caught up in other things. I can't wait to use some of these as my blog layout!

Taylor, that's a great attitude to have. I'm ready to go back to having fun. I'm anxious to see the new layouts, though I'm pretty darn attatched to the butterfly one I've got now!
i'm sorry jared that i named you for an example. i have nothing against you. and i understand that getting 50 is a ton. it's just i wasn't clear when they said they were going to pick 50 winners that they meant designs and not individuals. BUT i am EXTREMELY excited about VOX mentioning in the future that they might let us design our layout or themes ourselves with stuff we made and whatnot. so really, this is just a short-term confusion thing. once again i apologize to you jared for pointing you out. i know it wasn't your decision to be picked, after all good designs should get the proper publicity :P
it's just i wasn't clear when they said they were going to pick 50 winners that they meant designs and not individuals.

That's what I'm saying. I mean, they certainly didn't word it clearly. To quote:

But there's good news. Remember when we said we'd pick our favorite five and make themes out of theme? Well, after almost 600 entries, we've realized that there's no way we can just pick five. Right now, as of 5:00 pm PST we're down to the top 50 that we want to pick as winners and build out as themes.

This makes it appear that they were going to pick 50 individuals, not 50 designs. So it's understandable why some of us were confused. Not trying to say anything negative or anything when I say that, either. It was just confusing.
They were referring to 600 entries, not 600 individuals, and they carried out that reference throughout the announcement. They never referred to "individuals" or "contributors" or "designers" or "members" or "users" at all. They only ever referred to the "entries".

We're glad to see all the love for the entries that were picked!

As far as the confusion to whether we were going to pick 50 additional Voxers or 50 additional banners, we're sorry and will be clearer in the future.

We're really looking forward in seeing the banners built out and incorporated into Vox.

Thanks to everyone who participated. As promised, those who entered and were picked will receive additional invites. Since there were so many entrants, this may take a bit of time, but please be patient.

Thanks again!

Mena
