2008 Donors Choose Blogger Challenge

How would you like to make a difference in the life of a public school students?

For the second year in a row, Six Apart is participating in the DonorsChoose.org Blogger Challenge. The challenge runs all throughout the month of October, and we'd love for you to participate along with us. Just as we did last year, Six Apart is sponsoring the award for the bloggers who reach the most kids.

How It Works

The Blogger Challenge is a friendly contest amongst bloggers to raise money for low-income public schools. Here's how it works: teachers from all over the country post items for which they would like funding, such as writing supplies for a journalism class, equipment for a science lab, or music instruments for a band class. Bloggers choose their favorite projects and link to their challenge page in a post or via a giving widget on their blog. The bloggers who raise the most money or reach the most kids will win an award.

Here's how you can participate:

Go to the Donors Choose Blogger Challenge page and find a blogger's giving list you'd like to support.

Set up your own challenge and let your readers know in a blog post or by installing the widget (it just takes a few clicks).

No matter which way you choose to participate, you should feel incredibly proud of yourself for helping to bring resources to students in struggling classrooms.

Donors Choose will announce the results in early November, and we'll reveal the winners of the Six Apart award for bloggers who reached the most students shortly thereafter.

This would be better if this were not a competition. The award should be the giving, the help itself. We should be willing to help and not expect something in return. I participated last year and I helped over 300 students in three separate schools in my area with the help of a few people (900+ students total) but I didn't expect anything for it. I did it for the act of helping. Why do people need awards to motivate them to help others?

If it is honour, I not so have understood as to carry out the help. Basically, I not against, but explain as well as then I think is ready.

Question: How do you define "better"? More fun, more meaningful, more people becoming involved?

The more I learn about people, the more I discover that we all do things for different reasons. What motivates Carol may not motivate me. Doesn't make her better than me, just different.

If I am a highly competitive person, then why not add the competitive element? It may be just the thing to draw my attention and get me involved.

And the bottom line is, get people involved. Involvement ultimately means that others are being helped. And that is the bottom line.

I guess I should not have used the word 'better'. That's a relative term. To me, just getting involved for the sake of helping is enough. I imagine some people need the award as a motivation, but to me, an award just taints the whole idea of charity...and that what this is--a charitable project. The premise of volunteering is to do so because you want to not because there's a prize at the end.

If there's a prize it opens it up to tell others about it. Maybe they will want to do it too. And, likely as not, you won't get the prize, but if you did it would be fun to tell the story.
