LET'S GET NERDY! The fox itself looks like something I remember coloring in kindergarten, and the tail is a totally different texture with no real connection to his or her body. If the fox in question was in fact of the same texture or pattern of the tail section it would look ~OK~ IMHO~
maybe it means that Firefox is so fast the tail is on fire? but I'm not very good at knowing what exactly firefox is to begin with... I must be getting old.

I wonder if this is a cultural differences thing because of the Manga history etc... Westerners are likely to find a fox madras a little distasteful but over there, farts are more socially acceptable?
I think it's just super amounts of cute but cute in a way where it's being naughty cause it knows how to fart fire and the little grin on it's face is to reflect the fact that it's something only it knows how to do.

Some may not understand it - particularly folks in the West who haven't read much manga or watched much anime.
However... my $0.02 is that he's a kitsune - albeit a one-tailed kitsune. It would explain the flaming tail... since kitsune are traditionally fire-spirits. =:o)
